Job Summary
The Maintenance Manager is responsible for leading and delivering all maintenance activities across company sites, ensuring machinery, equipment, and building infrastructure operate safely, efficiently, and reliably.
The role focuses on preventative maintenance, breakdown response, statutory compliance, contractor management, and continuous improvement to minimise downtime and support production demands. The Maintenance Manager will also support new machinery installations, capital projects, and ensure full compliance with HSE, PUWER, LOLER, COSHH, LEV, CDG/CLP, and environmental standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintenance Leadership & Planning
- Lead and manage all maintenance activities across site(s), ensuring high equipment reliability and minimal operational downtime.
- Develop, implement, and maintain a Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) schedule for all machinery, equipment, and site systems.
- Plan, prioritise, and allocate maintenance workload to ensure urgent and routine tasks are completed efficiently.
- Support production planning by ensuring machinery availability aligns with operational requirements.
- Review maintenance performance and respond effectively to breakdowns and emergency repairs.
Machinery Maintenance, Repairs & Engineering Support
- Maintain, service, repair, and optimise a wide range of industrial equipment, including but not limited to:
- Robot palletisers
- Conveyor systems
- Automated bagging machines
- Large rotary drum mixers
- High-speed disperser (HSD) mixers
- Forklift truck (FLT) fleet
- Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) systems
- Industrial table saws
- Pumps, motors, and associated electrical and mechanical equipment
Key duties include:
- Diagnosing faults and carrying out mechanical and electrical fault-finding.
- Performing safe and effective repairs to minimise downtime.
- Conducting root cause analysis and implementing long-term solutions.
- Supporting machinery modifications, reliability improvements, and engineering projects.
- Ensuring all machinery complies with PUWER and LOLER requirements.
Site & Facilities Maintenance
- Oversee general building and grounds maintenance across all sites.
- Monitor and maintain fire safety systems, including alarms, emergency lighting, extinguishers, and fire exits
- Ensure utilities and infrastructure (electrical, mechanical, ventilation systems) are safe, functional, and compliant.
- Maintain clean, safe, and well-organised working and storage areas.
Compliance, Safety & Regulatory Control
- Ensure all maintenance activities comply with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and relevant regulations.
- Maintain compliance with PUWER, LOLER, COSHH, LEV, CDG, and CLP regulations.
- Coordinate and manage statutory inspections, including:
- LEV testing
- Lifting equipment inspections
- FLT servicing and inspections
- Electrical safety and PAT testing
- Maintain audit-ready documentation for ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and H&S audits.
- Support internal and external audits, close out corrective actions, and address equipment-related non-conformities.
Maintenance Systems, Records & Continuous Improvement
- Implement and manage the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
- Maintain accurate service records, breakdown logs, asset registers, and maintenance history.
- Analyse maintenance data to identify trends, recurring issues, and improvement opportunities.
- Prepare monthly maintenance reports and recommendations for senior management.
- Drive continuous improvement in reliability, efficiency, and maintenance cost control.
Contractor & Supplier Management
- Manage external contractors for servicing, inspections, repairs, and specialist works.
- Ensure contractors comply with site safety rules, permit-to-work systems, and induction procedures.
- Oversee service contracts, renewals, and supplier performance.
- Support the selection and review of engineering suppliers and equipment vendors.
Installation & Project Support
- Support the installation, commissioning, and integration of new machinery and site upgrades.
- Assist with layout planning, equipment positioning, and utility requirements.
- Conduct post-installation safety and operational checks.
- Contribute to engineering projects and capital expenditure planning.
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
Essential:
- Proven experience in maintenance management within a manufacturing, industrial, engineering, or chemical environment.
- Strong mechanical engineering background with hands-on fault-finding and repair capability.
- Experience working with PPM systems and CMMS software.
- Solid understanding of PUWER, LOLER, COSHH, LEV, HSAWA, and general HSE requirements.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering and technical drawings.
- Excellent organisational skills with strong attention to detail and record keeping.
- Calm, methodical, and adaptable approach in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work independently and lead maintenance activities effectively.
Desirable / Advantageous:
- Electrical or multi-skilled engineering experience.
- PAT testing qualification.
- Fire Marshal training.
- Forklift truck (FLT) licence.
