Senior Mechanical Design Engineer – Building Services

Location: Cardiff
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience

Role Overview

We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join a busy and growing building services consultancy in Cardiff. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering mechanical engineering design solutions across a diverse range of projects including commercial, residential, healthcare, education, and industrial sectors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design and engineering on projects from concept through to completion
  • Prepare and review detailed calculations, specifications, and design documentation
  • Produce drawings and BIM/Revit models to a high standard
  • Manage project deliverables including design risk assessments, client liaison, and coordination with multi-disciplinary teams
  • Mentor and support junior and intermediate engineers
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant UK standards and regulations (e.g., CIBSE, Building Regulations, Part L)
  • Keep up to date with industry best practices and emerging technologies
  • Contribute to business development and client relationship management

Skills & Experience

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering (BEng, MEng or equivalent)
  • Typically 6+ years’ experience in mechanical building services design consultancy
  • Strong technical knowledge of HVAC systems, heating, ventilation, cooling, and renewable technologies
  • Experience with design software including AutoCAD, Revit, and relevant calculation tools
  • Proven ability to manage projects and lead design teams
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Understanding of UK building regulations, CIBSE guides, and sustainability principles
  • Chartered status (e.g., CEng, MCIBSE) is preferred but not essential
