Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) – Special School – Birmingham
A dedicated and nurturing special school in Birmingham is seeking an experienced Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) to join their team. This is a vital role where you will take overall responsibility for safeguarding and child protection across the school, ensuring that the safety and wellbeing of all pupils remains the highest priority.

As the Designated Safeguarding Lead, you will work closely with the senior leadership team, teaching staff, and external agencies to ensure that safeguarding procedures are robust and consistently applied. You will provide support, guidance, and training to colleagues, while acting as the main point of contact for safeguarding concerns.

Responsibilities include:
  • Leading on all safeguarding and child protection matters across the school.
  • Acting as the first point of contact for safeguarding concerns, liaising with external agencies as required.
  • Ensuring policies and procedures are fully compliant with statutory guidance and best practice.
  • Delivering safeguarding training and guidance to staff.
  • Maintaining accurate, confidential records in line with school policy.
  • Supporting staff in identifying and responding to safeguarding and welfare issues.
  • Promoting a safeguarding culture where every child feels safe, supported, and valued.
The ideal candidate will have:
  • DSL experience, within a SEND setting.
  • A valid, in date DSL certificate.
  • Strong knowledge of statutory safeguarding guidance (Keeping Children Safe in Education, Working Together to Safeguard Children).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with pupils, staff, families, and external agencies.
  • The ability to remain calm, professional, and decisive in high-pressure situations.
  • A genuine commitment to the welfare of children and young people with special educational needs.
