Job Description
Want hands-on KS1 experience before teacher training?
Help pupils build strong reading, writing and number skills.
*** KS1 Graduate Teaching Assistant
*** Immediate start until July 2026
*** £80 - £90 per day
*** Large primary school, Selly Oak
*** Literacy and Numeracy support across KS1
What you’ll do:
You will deliver short, focused boosters in phonics, reading fluency and common exception words. You will lead guided writing, model sentence structure, and tighten spelling routines. You will build number fluency through daily practice, place value drills and simple problem solving. You will pre-teach key vocabulary and methods before new units begin. You will provide 1:1 catch up where needed and record quick outcomes, so next steps are clear. You will set up resources, keep routines tidy and support calm transitions throughout the day. You will liaise with the class teacher and the SENCO to keep support aligned with classroom teaching.
About you:
Clear communicator, organised, calm in busy classrooms. You explain ideas in small steps, spot misconceptions early, and build confidence.
- Degree – 2:2 or above in any subject.
- Communication – Strong verbal and written skills.
- Enhanced DBS – Held already or willingness to obtain.
- Desire to work in education/with children – Genuine interest in KS1 learning and wellbeing.
- Experience working with children – Tutoring, mentoring or volunteering is desirable but not essential.
The School:
A large Selly Oak primary with consistent routines from arrival to home time. Phonics is systematic and taught daily, with matched reading practice built in. Guided reading and handwriting have protected slots. Maths follows small, connected steps with regular retrieval so methods stay consistent between classes. Teams co-plan and share model texts, worked examples and ready-to-use intervention packs, so you are not starting from scratch. New colleagues receive a structured induction, weekly bite-size CPD and brief coaching drop ins with precise next steps, giving you the conditions to show impact quickly and build evidence for ITT.
How to Apply
Email your CV and include availability and DBS status. Add two referees if you can. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a brief call and an in-school observation. Early applications are encouraged, as the school may appoint before the closing date.
Due to the volume of applications, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
